The field of actigraphy, using wrist movement to estimate sleep, predates modern wearables by decades and originated in clinical sleep research in the 1970s-80s.
Sleep trackers are wearable or bedside devices — rings, watches, mattress sensors or phone apps — that use motion, heart rate and other sensors to estimate sleep stages, duration and quality overnight.
They're part of the broader quantified-self movement, appealing to people who want objective data on something as subjective as rest. Brands market them with sleep "scores" and personalized insights, tapping into a cultural shift toward treating sleep as a metric to optimize rather than simply experience.
Buying or beginning something creates a moment of intention. The user may drink more water, go to bed earlier, train more consistently, dim the lights or finally take ten minutes without a notification. The surrounding changes may carry much of the result.
When people expect an effect, they monitor for it. Reassurance may reduce worry; investment may increase adherence. This does not make the response imaginary — experience is produced by physiology and interpretation together.
People often begin a new intervention when symptoms are at their worst. Many symptoms then move closer to their usual level. The new object arrives precisely in time to accept the award.
